Teeny Tiny Baby Cian

Our good friends Tev and Riona have just had a baby boy, little Cian (pronounced KEY-an) - and on Sunday I got to meet him for the first time! He came a whole month early, and is still barely back to his birth weight of 6lbs, so I was too nervous to hold him … but I did get to take some photos. I can’t wait to go over soon with some lighting equipment and do my first proper baby portraiture session with him!

A Teaser Photo for Ben & Leanne

I’ve got a busy weekend of weddings - yesterday I was up north in Woodinville, today I’ll be heading east to Snoqualmie - but I wanted to share this teaser photo from yesterday’s wedding, my second time shooting with Fred Soo. Ben and Leanne were so easy to photograph - they are young and beautiful, complete naturals in front of the camera, and they are sweethearts too! And they had an English bridesmaid which made me feel at home (I’m English too in case you didn’t know!) Here they are after the ceremony, sharing a quiet moment together.

Jazz Portraiture: Bill & Jesse

A couple of weeks ago, I was asked by Jesse Canterbury to photograph him again, this time for a CD he is releasing with Bill Smith, one of the Pacific Northwest’s greatest experimental jazz musicians and teachers. I went along to The Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford to photograph them - a place where they often practice and perform. The light was pretty challenging (it’s a dark place in the afternoon!) but I loved the beautiful old windows in the former chapel on the fourth floor. Here’s one of my favorite images from our session - it’s actually a Photoshop merge of two separate photographs.

Mini Vacation

Well, I managed to get all of the boudoir girls’ photo CDs out in the mail to them nearly a week before they were due, so I rewarded myself with a mini vacation in Cannon Beach, Oregon. Josh and I took our puppy, Porter, and hung out at a beach-front apartment for a couple of days with his family and two of their friends. It was so nice to be able to just relax, play on the beach with the puppy, and even swim in the chilly northwest ocean! I took a few ‘just for fun’ photos too - and figured I should share them here. So here’s my take on a moody, unsettled, but always beautiful Oregon coast in July.

Love in the Rain: Johanna & David

There are few things worse on your wedding day than seeing the sky fill up with dark clouds and the wind begin to pick up. But in Seattle, it happens - probably more than we’d care to imagine. I was shooting the wedding of David and Johanna with the awesome Fred Soo last weekend - yes, the same weekend as all those boudoir shoots! - when just that happened. They put on brave faces and began the ceremony outside, but after five minutes of torrential rain, someone decided to call it a day and we moved back inside.

You’d expect, perhaps, that this killed the ceremony - but in fact I felt that it really added something. The cosiness of everyone huddling under the sea of umbrellas, the joyous laughter-filled walk back to the buildings under the huppa, the sense of warmth and relief as the ceremony resumed under a canopy of glass … It was during these moments that I found my favorite images, and it will certainly be a ceremony to be remembered.

I hope to share more over the next week or two; for now, a photo of the bridal party, making their way from the wet ceremony to the dry, under the huppa.
