Photoboothing the Night Away

I’ve had so many inquiries recently about my new photobooth that I thought I should write a little info blog for you all! I formally introduced the photobooth at Kathy Jo & Matt’s wedding in December, and I used it again on NYE at KerryAnn & Kevin’s wedding - and it looks like a good number of my summer wedding clients will also be using it, which is great! It’s been a really fun addition, and I think the best thing about it is that even the shyest guests come out of themselves and have a really good time goofing around when they’re in the photobooth setting. I’m not sure I can explain why, but it’s something good to know.

So, what is the photobooth? It’s not a booth in the traditional sense, but rather a little area that I set up with a black backdrop and a set of studio lights with umbrellas. It requires some space - the black background covers roughly 6 feet by 6 feet of wall space, and I set up the studio lights, one on each side, a few feet in front of the wall where the backdrop is. So, ideally, I need a space which is around 8 feet wide, 6 feet deep and 7-8 feet high, and it needs to be in a fairly low-traffic area so that the lights don’t get in the way of people passing through. I also need at least one power outlet, and it needs to be indoors or under cover. Most venues have the perfect space for a photobooth somewhere - and often it’s on the way to the rest rooms or near the bar area.

And how does it work? Well, I usually set up the booth during or after dinner, and we don’t use it until the key events of your reception have taken place - so usually after the toasts, cake-cutting, first dance and so on. It works well if we start the photobooth part way into the dancing part of the reception. If I’m working with an assistant, we take turns manning the booth - we use a dedicated digital SLR camera which is set up in the booth area, so we can just take it in turns taking photos there. If I’m working without an assistant, I will either set up the booth for just 45 minutes or so and be there the whole time, or the booth can be set up for longer and guests can come and find me for photos (and I’ll be out on the dance floor taking candids the rest of the time).

How much does it cost? For 2008, I am offering the photobooth for free to all of my wedding couples - all I ask is that you give me at least a couple of weeks’ notice if you’d like a photobooth at your wedding. While it is being offered free, I am processing the photos in black and white only.

So why have a photobooth? There are so many reasons! It’s great if you have lots of shy guests who usually avoid having their photo taken; it gives guests something else fun to do during the reception; it adds interest to your album; it’s a great way to get groups of friends together in photos when usually they aren’t included during the ‘formal’ photos; and last but not least, we always get GREAT pictures!

I think the photos speak for themselves - so here are some of my favorites from the two December weddings:

Hannah & Jerphy: A Holiday Engagement Session in Tacoma

Last Monday, on Martin Luther King Day, I met up with Hannah and Jerphy in Tacoma for their engagement session. We lucked out with bright blue skies and lots of sunshine for our photos, and the bitter January cold didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits.

It was my first time visiting Tacoma, so I let Hannah and Jerphy lead the way around Union Station (which was unfortunately closed for the holiday), the Museum of Glass and Ruston Way Park. I was a little surprised to find myself completely falling for Tacoma! There are so many cool spots there, my favorite of which was the fire escape next to the Museum of Glass. I love the old brick and rugged iron stairs, and I think if we had been a little warmer we’d have spent a lot more time playing there.

Our last stop was at Hannah and Jerphy’s wedding venue, the Northwest Baptist Seminary, a beautiful, tranquil venue perched high on a ridge overlooking Puget Sound. Gorgeous! I’m excited to be back in May to photograph their wedding.

Here are some of my favorite shots from our session …

Swish & Sip: Jewelry, Art & Wine

Wow, I meant to post this exciting piece of news weeks ago, so hopefully I’m not too late! One of our good friends, Christa Jansen, designs the most beautiful modern jewelry, and she’s having a show … this Friday! It’s being held at Theo Chocolate in Fremont, Seattle, and there will be live jazz by Dina Blade, lots of wine, a DJ (my husband Josh) and photography by yours truly. What fun! Oh, and of course Christa will be showing and selling pieces from her current collection. Please let me know if you plan on coming along as we’re trying to keep track of numbers.

If you want a sneak peek - or if you can’t make it on Friday - check out the Swish Jewels website. I had a session with Christa in December and my photos are slowly but surely taking over her site. And if you’re just that impatient, here are a few photos of some of my favorite adornments.

The Perfect Winter Wedding: Kipper & Andrew

You may remember Kipper and Andrew from one of my very first engagement sessions. Well, on Saturday the time finally came for their wedding, and it felt like I was being reunited with old friends. I’m now offering a complementary engagement session with my main wedding package - I feel it’s so important for us to all get to know each other, and it does wonders for your wedding day nerves if you’re already used to being in front of the camera.

I started the day with Kipper and her bridesmaids at the Mayflower Park Hotel downtown. They were having their makeup done there by the lovely and super-talented Kate Crotty … and yes, they were already drinking at 10:30am when I showed up! It was probably just as well - my fabulous second shooter Amanda Shea was greeted by a lively group of Rolling Rock-swilling groomsmen in Andrew’s room! Beer was even a theme for the wedding; Andrew’s from Australia, so they used the names of Australian beers as their table markers - such a cute idea!

After some detail shots and portraits with our respective groups, Amanda and I met up at Blessed Sacrament Church in the U District. It’s a gorgeous building, and I love photographing Catholic ceremonies. We spent some time doing the formal photos, then onto the ceremony itself at 3pm. The reception was over on Capitol Hill at DAR Rainier Chapter House, another splendid building. I arrived with the bridal party just in time to catch the end of cocktail hour and to get everyone in place for a huge full-group photo. Lots of fun!

The rest of the evening was a mixture of fantastic food by Ravishing Radish - including a curried butternut squash soup that I am still craving almost a week later - fun speeches and a whole lot of dancing. Kipper and Andrew hired the Michael Benson Band for the entire event and they were outstanding. Best live band I’ve ever seen, period. The way they mix up everything from big band and swing to Andre 3000’s ‘Hey Ya!’ is extraordinary, and my toughest job was not getting caught singing along. Luckily everyone else was far too busy on the dance floor to notice! And I want to add in a special thanks here to Kristin Pittman of Focus Events who made my life so much easier - it was great working with a coordinator, and Kristin is not only a fantastic coordinator but she’s also a sweetheart!

Anyway, here are some of my favorite photos, including a couple of Amanda’s shots of the guys and their little ring bearer Lohann. Enjoy!

Sunshine in Seattle: Erica & Rodney’s Engagement Session

I’d forgotten what sunshine was until Sunday! I met Erica and Rodney at the University of Washington campus on Sunday, and we were greeted by glorious sunshine and bright blue skies. We totally lucked out - it’s been pretty gross recently in Seattle!

Rodney went to school at the U, so it was a perfect spot to start their session. I love all the dramatic architecture, the pockets of green grass and the intimate little alcoves all around the campus, and in the bright sunshine it all gets even better. I was originally planning to use the architecture more, but when I realized how natural Erica and Rodney are in front of the camera, I decided that the buildings would just be a distraction. I did, however, have to play with the crazy afternoon sunshine that was streaming through the trees just below Red Square and Drumheller Fountain - my favorite photos are the ones with the powerful back- and rim-lighting. And yes, I love a bit of lens flare too!

Rodney and Erica also wanted some shots with the city skyline in the background, so after exploring the UW campus we headed up to one of my favorite Seattle lookouts, Kerry Park on Queen Anne. It was rammed with tourists, but we managed to persuade the crowds to give us a couple of moments alone on the wall overlooking that amazing Seattle view, and at my favorite Seattle sculpture, ‘Changing Form’.

I’ll be creating a guest book for Erica and Rodney’s wedding in March, so watch this space for a sneak preview … and until then, enjoy the photos of this gorgeous couple!

KerryAnn & Kevin’s NYE Extravaganza at the Smith Tower

You know it’s going to be a fabulous night when both the bride and the groom are keeping their sparkly shoes under wraps until the big night …

KerryAnn & Kevin’s wedding at The Chinese Room at the top of The Smith Tower in downtown Seattle really was quite spectacular. I started the day at the W Hotel, photographing the girls getting ready. It was there that I was introduced to the first pair of shoes - Kerry’s gorgeous Christian Louboutin glittery heels - and her super-cute above-the-knee Oscar de la Renta-style wedding dress. Fun!

I got back to the Smith Tower just as the first guests were arriving - and started my battle with the elevators. It’s an amazing venue, but the elevators are a killer when you’re a vendor, especially one that has to be everywhere at the same time! The boys arrived at around 6:30, full of great ideas for their group shots (I wish I could post them all), and then Kevin and his amazing silver loafers were whisked away upstairs before KerryAnn’s arrival. It’s becoming quite rare for couples not to see each other before the ceremony, but there’s something very special about having your groom see you for the first time as you walk down the aisle.

The ceremony was beautiful and really unusual, thanks in part to Pat Stimac, another fantastic officiant. I loved that they did a reading together, and Kevin’s niece Kiley did a spectacular job with hers - she’s by far the youngest reader I’ve ever seen at a wedding. After that, Rachel and I whisked Kerry & Kevin off for a portrait session in the lobby, and then the party began. Wow, what a party!

The champagne flowed … the Grey Goose and Knob Creek flowed … the food was outstanding, the dancing outrageous … people partied like it was New Year’s Eve! And, to top all that, their first dance (well, second really) was a top-secret and utterly fabulous dance to Prince’s ‘Kiss’. At midnight, we had a special treat: fireworks at the Space Needle, with a view up through 2nd Ave. Congratulations KerryAnn & Kevin, and enjoy your teasers!

Kathy Jo & Matt’s Winter Wedding in Everett

The end of 2007 was a busy time for me. After last Friday’s family portrait session I had two weddings within the space of just three days! First was Matt and Kathy Jo’s beautiful Christmasy wedding at the Monte Cristo Hotel in downtown Everett on Saturday December 29th. I started mid-afternoon with Kathy Jo, her sister and matron of honor Rebecca, and Rebecca’s two gorgeous kids, flower girl Jolee and ring-bearer Rian, photographing them getting ready in the upstairs office. It quickly became the place to hang out, and by 4pm we had a mini party going on! It made for some great photos.

Kathy Jo and Matt decided to have a ‘first look’ moment so that we could do family photos before the ceremony. It worked out really well - there’s a gorgeous fireplace in the main hall of the hotel, and it was the perfect backdrop for the semi-formal family photos. The ceremony was also held here - an intimate and emotional ceremony with around 40 of their closest family and friends watching. Everyone else (another 60 or so guests) arrived during cocktail hour and this is when the party really began - Kathy Jo and Matt’s friends truly know how to party!

It was such a fun wedding - and setting up the photobooth midway through the evening was the icing on the cake! Many thanks to my awesome assistant Rachel Barsness who captured some of my favorite images below - and she is partly to blame for there being a ton more teaser photos than usual … enjoy!

Portraits at The Pavilion: The Rosenkranz & Goldstein Family

Just after Christmas, I met up with the Rosenkranz and Goldstein family for a couple of hours of family portraiture. The original plan was to go to Seward Park, but rain was forecast so we decided to try out the warm and inviting Pavilion at the SAM Sculpture Park instead. It’s a great location for bad weather - the main room is pretty much surrounded by glass, so the natural light streaming in is almost as bright as outside, and the slight diffusion caused by the glass makes the light very soft and flattering. A new favorite spot for those rainy Seattle days methinks …

Our session was organized by Aubrey, a designer who lives here in Seattle with her two gorgeous daughters Sadie (age 2) and Ruby (just two months old) and her husband Andrew. They were joined by Andrew’s mom and dad, Sheila and Jerry, and his siblings Wendy and Mark. Wendy brought along her husband Rob and their kids Rachel and Lauren, and Mark brought along his two kids, Sophie and Isaac. Get well wishes to Mark’s wife Susanne who was unfortunately very poorly and unable to join us last Friday.

We shot mainly family and group photos, but of course I couldn’t resist throwing in a few minutes of candids too. Here are some of my favorites from our session - I hope you enjoy them!
