Calling All Awesome People: Get Hitched, Give Hope!

Here’s some exciting news: some very cool photographer friends of mine are throwing a big bridal charity bash at the fabulous Arctic Club on October 23rd, and I’ve been invited to bring along my photobooth!  Woo-hoo!  Here’s a bit of blurb about the event:

Get Hitched, Give Hope is a fabulous cocktail party fundraiser happening on October 23 at the Dome Room of the Arctic Club in Seattle. Brides, grooms and guests will have the opportunity to indulge in sips and sweets while they mingle with wedding vendors, shop for gorgeous wedding day goods, and give to a great cause.

I’d LOVE for you all to spread the word, and I’m looking forward to seeing all my 2009 brides all dolled up and ready to party on Thursday October 23rd.  Don’t forget to swing by the photobooth and say hi!

Photoboothing the Night Away

I’ve had so many inquiries recently about my new photobooth that I thought I should write a little info blog for you all! I formally introduced the photobooth at Kathy Jo & Matt’s wedding in December, and I used it again on NYE at KerryAnn & Kevin’s wedding - and it looks like a good number of my summer wedding clients will also be using it, which is great! It’s been a really fun addition, and I think the best thing about it is that even the shyest guests come out of themselves and have a really good time goofing around when they’re in the photobooth setting. I’m not sure I can explain why, but it’s something good to know.

So, what is the photobooth? It’s not a booth in the traditional sense, but rather a little area that I set up with a black backdrop and a set of studio lights with umbrellas. It requires some space - the black background covers roughly 6 feet by 6 feet of wall space, and I set up the studio lights, one on each side, a few feet in front of the wall where the backdrop is. So, ideally, I need a space which is around 8 feet wide, 6 feet deep and 7-8 feet high, and it needs to be in a fairly low-traffic area so that the lights don’t get in the way of people passing through. I also need at least one power outlet, and it needs to be indoors or under cover. Most venues have the perfect space for a photobooth somewhere - and often it’s on the way to the rest rooms or near the bar area.

And how does it work? Well, I usually set up the booth during or after dinner, and we don’t use it until the key events of your reception have taken place - so usually after the toasts, cake-cutting, first dance and so on. It works well if we start the photobooth part way into the dancing part of the reception. If I’m working with an assistant, we take turns manning the booth - we use a dedicated digital SLR camera which is set up in the booth area, so we can just take it in turns taking photos there. If I’m working without an assistant, I will either set up the booth for just 45 minutes or so and be there the whole time, or the booth can be set up for longer and guests can come and find me for photos (and I’ll be out on the dance floor taking candids the rest of the time).

How much does it cost? For 2008, I am offering the photobooth for free to all of my wedding couples - all I ask is that you give me at least a couple of weeks’ notice if you’d like a photobooth at your wedding. While it is being offered free, I am processing the photos in black and white only.

So why have a photobooth? There are so many reasons! It’s great if you have lots of shy guests who usually avoid having their photo taken; it gives guests something else fun to do during the reception; it adds interest to your album; it’s a great way to get groups of friends together in photos when usually they aren’t included during the ‘formal’ photos; and last but not least, we always get GREAT pictures!

I think the photos speak for themselves - so here are some of my favorites from the two December weddings:

Merry Christmas … and happy new photoboothing!

I hope you are all enjoying the holiday season. I can’t believe that we even had some snow yesterday here in Seattle - what a treat! Christmas day started out very quiet for the McElwee household, just the three of us (Josh, Porter our black lab, and me) opening presents, phoning family and listening to Christmas music. In the afternoon we headed over to Ravenna to join our Seattle family (a.k.a. our closest friends) for Christmas dinner, games, drinks-a-plenty and much merriment. Wayne cooked up the most amazing ham I’ve ever had in my life (he bought it at A&J Meats on Queen Anne) and I spent most of the evening in a post-piggy food-coma. But I had a special task to do - trialling the photobooth I’ll be using at my next two weddings.

The photos below were all taken in Wayne & Stacey’s basement, with just a black backdrop and a couple of studio lights with umbrellas. It’s a set-up which is quick and easy for weddings and parties, and I’m really excited to be using it for the first time at Kathy Jo & Matt’s wedding this coming Saturday in Everett, and KerryAnn and Kevin’s New Year wedding! As you can see, a few merry people and a willing photographer (or photographer’s assistant) can result in some very fun pictures. I’ll be offering this to all of my 2008 wedding couples where time and space allow. Let me know if you’re interested!

And now for an exciting announcement …

As promised yesterday, I have some exciting news to share with you all: I have a brand spanking sparkly new website! I was hoping to go live with it last Friday, but it’s been a bit slow getting going - as apparently these things are - but at least it’s working with one domain name for now (it should be working on my regular website address too soon, hopefully in a day or two). So without further ado, here’s the new site!

Boudoir Marathon Season

Well, OK, so maybe it’s not exactly boudoir marathon season, but it sure feels like it around here! I spent the last Saturday of August in a huge, light-happy studio in Ballard photographing five gorgeous girls in all kinds of outfits and poses. We had a kayaking life jacket (best prop ever!), a cute gray army wife T, a ton of sexy pearl necklaces, a real school uniform, some killer heels, and of course some very pretty lingerie. Tons of fun! The studio is my new favorite place, too: there’s a sexy black wall, a high-fashion white wall, and even a double bed in its own little bedroom area!

I’ll be back there in a week or so for my last boudoir marathon of the summer. There are at least six girls already booked in, but I currently have spaces on Saturday at 11am, and on Sunday at 3pm, 5pm and 7pm. There’s more info on my boudoir page here. Send me an email if you’re interested! And finally - here are three of the girls’ teaser photographs from last Saturday’s session.

Boudoir Shoot on June 23rd

Latest news: The sessions are fully booked! Watch this space for more info about up-coming boudoir shoots later this summer!

It’s been a crazy week here - work is piling in, I’ve been out in Illinois for a week’s vacation, and all of a sudden I’m doing a day of boudoir shoots on Saturday June 23rd! I thought I’d better post about it here in case you’ve been reading and are interested - and you’d better be quick because the first three slots have already filled up! (I currently have availability at 6:30pm, 8pm and 9:30pm.)

Here are the package details:

  • a one hour shoot in a suite at a very nice hotel in Seattle (further details on request)
  • a CD/DVD of high-resolution, edited, print-ready images
  • as many outfit/hair/makeup changes as you like within the time frame
  • as many poses as you like - and I have a ton of ideas for you, so don’t worry about being nervous!
  • a private slide show hosted on my website - which you can choose to share with your significant other or even your friends if you wish

The total price is $200 (plus tax) - and I’m covering the cost of the hotel, so no nasty hidden charges! I’ll also be offering a print package if you’d prefer to get some fine-art prints rather than create your own photo album book (lots of girls use iPhoto, MyPublisher, and similar services to create an affordable photo album for their sweeties).

There are other boudoir photos on here, but here’s one of my favorites of the gorgeous Michelle - from my first ever boudoir shoot!

My First Fine Art Sale!

I just got a voice mail from the fabulous Dean at Gene Juarez saying that they’ve sold one of the three pieces I have on display there. I’m so excited to find out which one! We’re hoping that any photographs sold will be left up on display until the end of the exhibition rotation (each rotation lasts three months), but I may need to choose a replacement piece if the buyer wants to take it home immediately. I’m thinking that I may replace it with this one - it’s the first self-portrait from the series, and its working title is Twins.

I’m Exhibiting!

I’m currently exhibiting three pieces from a series of 11 self-portraits at Gene Juarez, downtown Seattle. They’re black and white fiber prints, and it’s really nice that after putting in so much work they’re out there for the world to see (naked butt and all, might I add!)

The idea behind the series was to explore a woman’s time on her own - and the various moods and states that she finds herself in. I also wanted to utilize the idea of creating art through obstructions (the idea came from the movie The Five Obstructions by Lars von Trier and Jorgen Leth - which I highly recommend as a piece of art and humorous documentary rather than a straightforward movie). My five obstructions were: (1) use all manual settings; (2) obtain no help from outside (for example with focusing); (3) use only a 50mm lens; (4) shoot indoors; (5) use natural light.

Anyway, here are the three images currently on display:
