I spent the last week in small-town Texas at the Foundation Workshop, “the toughest photojournalism workshop for wedding photographers”. I had first heard about the workshop a couple of years ago, but it didn’t seem like the place for me; I was happy taking my nice, safe, pretty wedding pictures. Plus, it was a $4k investment! Not an amount I’d ever really feel comfortable spending on a class, right?

Still, I joined the online forum as that seemed like a much more reasonable place to start exploring this photojournalism thing that so many wedding photographers talk about. Fast forward a year and I was hooked. The forum was bursting with talent, a special kind of talent, free of ego and eager to help (a rare find in the wedding world).

Early last spring, Foundation Workshop 10 (FW10) was announced and I closed my eyes, held my breath, and signed up. I wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself into, but I knew it was time to open myself up to a new type of learning experience. Plus, I’d become bored with my nice, safe, pretty pictures, and I was itching to dig a little deeper.

A week last Saturday, I found myself among friends. Some I’d met on the forum, some I knew in real life, but also many new faces. I knew it was a pretty special group of people, but I had no idea that I’d soon come to think of them as family.

After twenty four hours of lazing in the sun, drinking margaritas, and catching up on gossip, we split up into our teams and work began. Each team consisted of a team leader, two mentors, an assistant and six students. And yes, that kind of ratio is necessary for this level of learning. At some point between Sunday evening and Monday morning we were told our assignments. Mine: a dance studio in nearby Granbury, TX.

On Monday we photographed. Some students spent 14 hours on their assignment; mine lasted just a few short hours each afternoon (I was thankful for the additional sleeping time, truth be told!) Around 8:30pm, we gathered again as a team, and the critiques began. Each student received around an hour of hardcore critique. My team leader, the wonderful Tyler Wirken, decided we’d be Team Tough Love. He wasn’t kidding – it was painful, but the laughter (and hugs) we shared made it more than bearable. Bedtime was sometime after 2:30am … and some of my team mates were up before dawn to set out for their assignments.

On Tuesday morning, I broke down. I had completely bombed on Monday. Everything I thought I could do, now seemed impossible. Even basic stuff like composing a frame. I’d received incredible on-site tutoring from Tyler, and a very fair critique later that night, but suddenly my world had been turned upside down and panic set in. My mind went completely blank.

One of the things I love most about this special community is the support in place. There were two counselors available to talk to, as well as our team assistants. After pacing the hotel helplessly for an hour, I gave in and called all of them. Janine, our team assistant, was still at the hotel and she immediately found me and talked things through with me for well over an hour. She helped sooth me, first, then helped figure out a practical plan for shooting so that I could focus on smaller tasks rather than rushing out and trying to do it all. I cannot thank her enough for her support.

I bombed day two, too, but while at my assignment I received several hours of one-on-one tuition from both Tyler and one of our mentors, Erwin. Between them, they taught me how to hold my camera correctly (seriously!); how to stop, focus and look for images; how to compose, then recompose, and recompose again; how to select the lens needed for the task; how to wait for the moment; how to square up to my subject … and another hundred things that I hope may eventually come back to me. I still wasn’t getting much in my camera, but at least the learning process had really started.

Wednesday came and I woke up a different person. I was calm, at peace with myself, and focused. It was a strange feeling for someone with mild OCD who likes to chase metaphorical squirrels. Strange and beautiful. Before heading out to my assignment I recited my mantra: “Stop. What is interesting? Visualize the shot. Move. Compose. Recompose in tiny movements. Wait for the moment. Then shoot the shit out of it!”

I only had two hours to photograph on Wednesday, but in those two hours I worked my ass off like I never have before. I was seeing differently; my mind was calm. I observed, I listened, I waited. And then I captured some of it. I didn’t have much, and it still wasn’t the work I’d hoped to be producing by the end of the week, but my outlook had changed and finally I was smiling. On the drive back to the hotel, I switched off the radio so I that could focus on the feeling of elation I was experiencing.

I didn’t need to be told I’d done well that night, but when Tyler and Erwin told me how freakin’ proud of me they were, I came close to tears. It was a good night.

The workshop officially ended on Thursday with dinner, followed by slideshows of our best work. My presentation was one of the weakest there, but that was the last thing I cared about; I had come SO FAR. I had learned how to see, how to calm my mind, how to focus. We had been told over and over that the slideshow didn’t matter – and I finally realized it was true.

My turn came and I was standing against the back wall. Tyler grabbed one of my hands, and Caroline, one of my team mates, grabbed the other. Thank God. Because as soon as those images came up, I started convulsing, and bawling. With joy!

Each student has a different experience on Foundation, but many experience incredible growth, sometimes photographic, sometimes personal, oftentimes both. I am so grateful to my teachers, to my team, to my friends. There are no words to thank those who helped me on my journey last week, but I know that those people know who they are, and what they did for me. I love you, family.

We can only share two images online; here are two of mine:

I’m once again absolutely delighted to have placed in the latest contest by the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers (ISPWP). It is a huge honor to have a successful image in the contest because the talent in the group is huge, and the number of entries incredible (I judged the winter 2010 contest which had almost 3,000 entries – and I have a feeling the competition grows each quarter). Even more fun for me is that the image that ended up placing was from Emilie + Alexei’s Hurricane Irene wedding … hey, I can produce award-winning work even when soaked to the bone and battling a hurricane. Yeah! Thanks again to my wonderful assistant Charlotte for spending much of that day shielding me from the worst of the elements with a huge golf umbrella, and ultimately making this image possible:

It’s funny photographing your friends. This is the first time I’ve been hired by really close friends to document their wedding, and it makes for a very different day than usual. Although I’m photographing them just how I photograph any of my couples, when I look back at the images, the emotional attachment I feel, the tingles that creep up my arm … well, it’s striking. I could look at their pictures for hours. I know when I see the candids of guests that yes – that really is such a Scotty expression, and wow – my hubby looks super cute in that picture, and – haha! – Michelle knows how to strike a pose in the photobooth. It is a little insight into what I guess most of my clients and their families and friends must feel when they see their own wedding photos for the first time. It’s pretty awesome.

Beth and Mike’s teasers will start properly late next week (I have another wedding and some portraits to blog first), but I wanted to share this photo from their first dance. Honestly, there are any number of photos I could have chosen, photos that make me smile and tug at my heart a little, but I love the quiet sweetness of this shot. The way Mike is holding her, the way his eyes are closed and he is really feeling the moment … the way that, despite four fabulous inches of Badgley Mischka shoes, Beth still has to reach up to wrap her arms around his neck … I love these guys and I guess this photo shows a little sliver of what it is that I love.

I spent the last week in Denver, CO with the man himself, Jerry Ghionis. For any non-photographers reading this, Jerry is one of the world’s very best wedding photographers, and he is also an incredibly gifted teacher. The workshop was a huge investment, and I was adamant that I would not come away with lots of great ideas that never get realized. So, this afternoon, I had a friend of a friend, Anna, come by and play model for me. Anna was married in her home country of Ireland over the summer, and considers herself to be “not photogenic”. I love a challenge!

I limited myself to the confines of my home, and an hour of photography. Oh, and all natural light. I wanted to keep it simple, and focus on light and posing. Here’s what we got:

Mirror images – probably my absolute favorite of the afternoon:

The bright red of the dining room wall made a great background, even in black and white:

One last image from the guest room:

I’d love to hear your thoughts; do these more posed shots sit comfortably with the rest of my work? Would you like to see more?

I’ve just returned home from a two and a half week vacation in England. Well, mostly a vacation – I also photographed a wedding with the fabulous Mister Phill, but more on that later. One of the highlights of my trip was Christmas Day, and no, it wasn’t because of the presents, nor the roast ham. My dad took my hubby Josh and I down to the beach below their flat in Exmouth to watch Exmouth’s annual Christmas Day Swim. The Christmas Day Swim is an institution in Exmouth – and indeed in many of the towns along the south coast of England. It’s pure madness, of course (it’s not exactly warm in the winter in the UK) but that makes it all the more fun to watch, and the pleasure was doubled this year with the snow on the ground (a rare Christmas treat) and the bright blue skies.

Of course, I couldn’t resist taking a few photos.

A lot of the swimmers dress up each year – I was quite taken with the Supergirls (as were the press photographers who pounced on them as soon as I started chatting with them), and it was fun seeing so many Santa Clauses in the crowd.

The guy’s face above says it all.

Damn cold! And damn steamy! Got to love that backlight … The older couple in the crowd below cracked me up – such silly hats, such serious expressions:

Cold … but happy.

Thank you, dad, for taking us down there – it was a treat!

I went to Tokyo in March with my husband. It was a totally last minute trip, and it was amazing. Josh was working much of the time, so I spent a lot of time exploring with my camera. It was a little isolating … the culture is so different, and deciding to go just two weeks before we had to leave didn’t give me enough time to learn any Japanese. I took well over a thousand photos over the ten days we were in Japan … I’ve knocked them down to 250 or so keepers … and many of them will be posted here, at some point. I figure, pictures are meant to be seen, right? Even if it is just a random assortment of my impressions of the strangest and coolest city I’ve ever visited.

I was utterly fascinated by the ultra modern right bang next to the old and traditional. Both beautiful, but in such stark contrast.

Tokyo’s huge fish market, Tsukiji Market, deserves an early start (6am is not early enough) and a week’s worth of exploration. A couple of hours whet my appetite … as did the multiple breakfasts (Josh ate three separate breakfast meals that morning).

More to come … at some point.

Diptych Day is a weekly project with Seattle wedding photographer Amelia Soper. For week five of our project, we decided to have circle as our theme. After last week, we both felt like having an easier ride, but truth be told I actually found this more taxing, conceptually, than any of the previous themes. Sure, there are tons of circular things out there I could have shot, but that didn’t seem to be quite enough. A couple of days ago I came to the conclusion that shooting circles through a circle might work for me, and it would challenge me technically too (which is half the fun).

I wanted to use circles that are a major part of my day to day life, so the obvious choice was my wedding ring. I also liked the circular holes in my birth control packaging and figured I could make new circles by shining a light through the holes. The shot turned out well, but it was too …. clean. I wandered into the kitchen and grabbed a hexagonal grater box. The weird angles made the circles less circly and finally I got the abstract look I was hoping for. So that’s my finished shot on the left.

I love how Amy’s shot also uses layers of circles – the first circle is the rim of the glass … then a layer of tiny circular bubbles … and then the circle formed where the stem attaches. The colors look great together too.

Wow, congratulations if you made your way through all that! I hope you enjoy our diptych this week … and head on over to Amy’s blog later today to hear her side of the circle story.

This week was a tough one for us both! Amy and I both had some motivational issues, and I’m pretty sure the main cause for this was a sticky theme. Maybe we should stick with easier ones! Having said that, I do actually love what we ended up with as a diptych. Seattle wedding photographer Amelia Soper took the gorgeous image on the left of her kitty Cleo sitting in her favorite wrestling spot (!) and I decided to go for the macro perspective with backlit water drops as they rushed out of the shower head.

It was a fun technical workout for me this week … will the fastest available sync speed of 1/250 actually show droplets? Yes! In fact, this was shot at 1/100. Can I backlight the water without wrecking my speedlight and Pocket Wizard? Yes! Ziplock bags are my friends. Can I even focus on the water droplets themselves? Not on auto focus, no. I switched to manual focus (Laura, I hope you’re reading this) and got close enough. I wish the focus was better but getting it this close took 27 frames, and I have a whole host of other projects I should be working on right now … Anyway, we’d love to hear your reactions. And head on over to Amy’s blog later today for her perspective on this week’s challenge.

For our third Diptych Day, Amy and I decided to shoot coffee. Despite living there for less than ten percent of my life so far, I still consider Seattle home in many ways, and one of the things I miss most about my favorite PNW city is the amazing coffee you can get there. In Boston, Starbucks makes me happy; in Seattle, I avoid Starbucks like the plague and head over to Neptune, Zoka or Herkimer, or one of the many, many other fantastic coffee shops there.

If I was still in Seattle, my coffee photo (on the left) would no doubt look almost identical to Amy’s (on the right) … but in Boston, coffee equals the morning cup of Americano that I make with our home espresso machine. That morning cup of hot black liquid truly is one of the great pleasures in life. For another perspective, be sure to check out Seattle photographer Amelia Soper’s post.
