I’m so happy to finally be back to engagements – it’s been a long winter of a whole lotta nothing going on (something I am still trying to get used to here on the east coast – Seattle was busy with weddings and engagements all year round) but I’m feeling refreshed and excited about all the sessions I have going on over the next couple of months.

On Saturday, I headed down to Cape Cod where I met up with Jen and Morgan. They booked me to photograph their wedding last summer, but this was our first time meeting. I loved them! These guys are funny – hilarious! – and passionate. Morgan had me in stitches and Jen’s the kind of girl you want to spend the evening with, along with a bottle or two of wine, gossiping the night away. They also have the best dogs ever (well, theoretically, Jen’s parents have them) – but more on them later.

We started off on a little patch of beach. It was a warm day everywhere else in Massachusetts – not here. It was also crazy windy. And yet, this might just be my favorite shot of the day:

It was sooo cold, that the only sensible thing to do was to snuggle up and try to think of summer.

The sky was looking pretty good though – love this one:

We decided that the beach was just too cold for photos, so we headed over to a family friend’s property. The friend wasn’t there, so she might be surprised to see the next set of photos!

I loved the rich, warm colors in among the grasses … and Morgan pointed out this very cool tree in the yard:

For our next stop I had a request: find me somewhere outdoors with a bench or table where you can sit. I was hoping for some good stuff – I never imagined it would be this good:

I LOVE how they interact. Still flirting, like they just met.

A couple more photos in the park …

… then we headed to the restaurant in town where Jen spent many a summer waitressing. They had a glass of wine and I did the paparazzo thing.

We went back to the house to grab the doggies and take them down to the beach. We got some cute pics on the beach, but my absolute favorites came from the five minutes back in the kitchen. This is the beautiful, energetic and sometimes noisy Harley:

And that’s Jen’s pup, the sweet, quiet and oh-so-gentle Boston. I really wanted to take them both home with me – they’re such lovely dogs. One last photo on the beach to finish up with: Boston exploring the dunes. Thank you guys for a super fun afternoon, and for braving the frigid temperatures on the beach. I hope you enjoyed the teasers – lots more coming your way soon.

Fall has been busy for me, and I’ve gotten a little behind with my blogging. It was almost three weeks ago that I met up with Patty and Nate for their engagement session, and I can’t tell you how happy I am to *finally* share their teasers with you! We all met up on a sunny afternoon in Newburyport, MA. Patty and Nate wanted a mixture of urban cool and outdoorsy beauty for their engagement photos, and although they’d never been up there before, they loved my idea of meeting in Newburyport, that quintessential New England seaside town.

It was only my third visit to the town, so I suggested that we meet in the park and explore the streets together, seeing what jumped out at us. The first spot I chose for the light:

I loved this painted wall in one of the little alleyways off the main drag. The light was pretty and that blue was heaven. Love this shot of Patty giggling!

These guys are total stylistas and brought along three different outfits for the session. I love that! You can never have too many cute wardrobe changes as far as I’m concerned. They also nailed the “complementary but not matchy-matchy” suggestion I have for portrait sessions.

There are so many gorgeous spots for photos in this town – it’s totally worth the trek from Boston, and as an added bonus you can stop by my favorite foody store Joppa Fine Foods while you’re there (thank you to Leah for introducing me to Joppa, and to NBPT in general). I’m liking this little series on the bench:

Our second location was Salisbury Beach, which, despite the lovely weather that afternoon, was almost entirely deserted. Happy days!

The sand dunes, the sea, the late afternoon sky … ahhh, heaven. Also, these guys are ridiculously cute and made my job SO easy.

As we headed back to Newburyport, I wanted to grab one last shot with the setting sun – the sky was amazing. If you like my Facebook Page, you’ll have already seen the misfire that I ended up loving – but this is what I was really going for. Thank you Nate and Patty for waiting so patiently for your teasers. I had such a wonderful afternoon with you both, and hope you love your teasers!

On Friday afternoon, I met up with Amy and Eric at the Public Garden for their engagement photos. We totally lucked out with the weather – and the late afternoon light was gorgeous. Golden halo time! We started out on the bridge by the swan boats. It’s a lovely spot if you have the patience to wait for the tourists to go past.

We wandered around one side of the pond, first stopping (illegally) in this sun-soaked spot:

Amy and Eric laugh a lot together, and I just LOVE Amy’s face when she laughs. Next up, a shadier patch near a big old oak tree:

Before leaving for our next destination, we grabbed a few shots under a willow right on the edge of the pond …

… and of course I couldn’t resist some carousel photos on the Common! Our second location was the South End. Amy and Eric had made a little tour of the area before the session, and I LOVE the streets they found for photos. This one was up near Columbus – check out that crazy light!

We then stopped at Stephi’s on Tremont for a beer, then a final couple of photos in a sweet residential square. Thank you both for an awesome afternoon, exploring the prettiest areas in town, and I hope you like your teasers!

Steve and Nell are a seriously awesome couple – no surprise really, as they were a referral from my super rad hairdresser at Station8 Salon in JP. Thanks Pam! I was ridiculously excited about their engagement session, not just because of who they are, but also because they wanted to go back to their old school for the session. Yeah! So, mid week this week, we headed out to the Cambridge School of Weston for some fun photos. They met there twenty years ago, and although they cycled in and out of crushes on each other, the timing never quite worked out and they remained best friends. Three years ago, they finally started dating. It must have been somewhat of a relief for their friends and family!

We started our tour in the dance studio. Nell danced at school, and Steve, it seems, liked to hang out in the studio to watch the pretty dancing girls … Then, we headed outside to the amphitheater.

The woodland surrounding the school is so pretty (and yet so full of evil mosquitoes!) I love that Nell looks cute even when running high-speed through a forest … and Steve looks … funny.

One of many new buildings that have sprung up since Steve and Nell’s school days … I loved the lines and the light here.

This red wall at the back of the brand new theater was pretty much made for engagement sessions:

Then back outside, onto the sports field, for some piggyback riding … and a final shot at the back of the dance studio:

One of Nell and Steve’s favorite spots during their school years was the Dairy Joy in Weston. We decided it would make for a great photo opp (and of course the ice creams are seriously YUM):

And now for my favorite photos of the day … ice cream eating!

Yay for ice cream mustaches! And yay again for ice cream mini-fights!

Thank you, thank you Steve and Nell for a super fun afternoon. And for delicious vanilla ice cream. I hope you like your teasers!

A couple of Mondays ago, I met up with this super silly and totally up-for-it couple for a very unique engagement session. These two met during a woodworking class at the hobby shop at MIT, where they were struggling to get the chisel mortiser to cooperate. I loved that we were able to go back to the place they met for their engagement session, even if it was at the crack of dawn (OK, not quite – but 9am is pretty early in my book).

The hobby shop is a challenging space to use for photos, so I’m really excited about how the session turned out. We were working with mixed fluorescent and tungsten lighting, underground, with dust and wood chips everywhere. There were no clean, pretty backdrops, no fall foliage, no gorgeous natural light … so I brought in a speedlight, played up the 50s feel and we worked to create cute and silly scenarios with the various pieces of equipment and work spaces. Awesome! I’d love to know what you think about this session – so please leave me a comment! Guys, thank you for such a fun morning and I hope you like the teasers.

A couple of weekends ago, Becky and Deric flew over from Seattle to join me for a second round of engagement photos (and also to have a fun weekend hanging out in sunny Boston). It was awesome seeing them again – they immediately felt like old friends – and I was super excited to photograph them in two of my favorite spots in town. We started off the morning at Larz Anderson Park in Brookline, a ridiculously beautiful place with a lovely pond filled with koi, a huge hill, and willow trees all over the place. We also totally lucked out with the weather – hello beautiful sunshine, I love back light!

After getting our exercise for the day clambering over the hill, we headed into Back Bay for some photos along Marlborough Street. This was the very first thing that made me fall in love with Boston back in April, and it was neat coming here for photos with those gorgeous fall colors. Thank you Deric and Becky for being awesome sports, and for making that crazy 6 hour plane ride to come see me here in Beantown. I hope you like your teasers!

Two Saturdays ago, I had my very first New England engagement session with the lovely Jessica and Chris. They were up visiting from NYC for Jess’s dad’s birthday, and we seized the opportunity to get some gorgeous fall photos in and around Wellesley, MA. After meeting the family and wolfing down some amazing carrot cake (thank you, Jess’s mom!) we headed out to Elm Bank where this cute couple are getting married next July. It’s a beautiful place, with a river, bridges, beautiful plants, cool old buildings and the sweetest hill covered with majestic trees. We started out in the gardens, grabbing every chance we were offered for pretty light (the sun was quite patchy that day), then headed up to the little hill (love the shot of them running – catapulting! – down the hill!) and then down to the bridge over the Charles River. After exhausting Elm Bank we took a few final photos on the running path near Jess’ home – the color in the leaves was amazing there, and it was the perfect spot for these enthusiastic runners. Thank you both for a lovely afternoon – and I can’t wait to follow up with some city shots in New York!

This week has been super crazy for me – the packers finally came Thursday and the last box hit the road to Boston in a very, very large truck yesterday afternoon. I’m sitting in an empty house writing this, each stroke of the keyboard echoing around me. I’m about to pack up my computer for shipping, but I had to post these teasers for Becky and Deric first.

I met with these sweethearts on Ballard Ave on Wednesday afternoon. They live in the area, and love the street with its cute boutiques and yummy restaurants. After a few shots there, we headed over to the locks, where Deric proposed. We found a very pretty garden, and some even prettier light, up on the banks overlooking the water. Our final stop was Discovery Park. It was Deric’s first time there – and Becky’s first visit to the bluff area – and they were both blown away by how beautiful it is. I adore the shots of them in the grasses, and the final ones with the fading hollyhocks. It was the perfect setting for this cute, funny, happy and utterly loved up couple. Guys, thank you for a wonderful afternoon, and I can’t wait for round two in Boston in a few short weeks!

Last week, on a gloriously sunny day, I drove out to Lake Kachess for Tim and Jackie’s engagement session. Never having been there before, I was totally unprepared for the amazing beauty of the lake and the surrounding forests and waterfalls. It was breathtaking! Jackie has been vacationing there since she was a little girl, and it is where Tim proposed to her this May. It was fun meeting her parents and exploring the area around the cabin that they rent each year.

We started off with a couple of lakeside spots, then headed into the public park. I love the huge firs there, and the lake itself is just gorgeous. Jackie and Tim seemed so happy and relaxed in their home-away-from-home and I enjoyed getting to know them better. Towards the end of the session, we jumped in Jackie’s parents’ ski boat and motored up to the far end of the lake for some final photos by the waterfall. The light was crazy over there and it was a bit of a challenge getting the shots I wanted (but I think we did pretty well in the end). On the way back to the cabin, Jackie’s dad jumped on the water skis – I couldn’t resist snapping a few shots of his high-speed action. Thank you all for a beautiful afternoon away from the city, and see you next July in Seattle!
