BEST OF 2011 WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY: PORTRAITS + CEREMONY

Last week I posted some of my favorite getting ready and first look photos, along with a handful of portraits … so today it’s all about the ceremony. OK, and maybe a few more portraits to get the ball rolling.

In 2011 I had the good fortune to photograph in some amazing places, and the photos below came from Seattle (a super cool indie wedding no less), Wentworth by the Sea Country Club, The Connor Family Retreat, The Liberty Hotel (and the Cambodian ceremony the day before at a private home outside Boston), Turner Hill in Ipswich, MA (possibly my favorite estate venue in the area), Belle Mer (my new favorite Newport, RI venue), The Paulist Center in Boston, a private home south of the city, a winter wedding on the beach in Plymouth, MA, Le Meridien in Cambridge, The Boston Marriott Cambridge (an amazing Indian wedding!), The Taj Boston (love that rooftop terrace), The Omni Mount Washington Hotel in the White Mountains (a fairytale venue if ever there was one), Cambridge City Hall (my most intimate wedding of the year with just the couple, myself and the officiant present), an old favorite – Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, MA, and a number of cute churches dotted around the New England area. POST WEDDING PHOTOS IN BOSTON: JESSICA + JEFF

I’m gearing up for a couple of weeks of intense wedding blogging – I recently photographed two amazing two-day multicultural weddings at the Liberty Hotel in Boston and at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, MA, as well as an incredibly intimate wedding at City Hall in Cambridge – but I wanted to sneak in some post wedding “trash the dress” couples photos while I’m finishing up the editing for those posts. Fall is a really popular time for taking your wedding dress out for a second spin, and I was delighted when Jessica and Jeff contacted me for a portrait session following their wedding back home in the Midwest.

Jessica and Jeff moved to Boston a few months ago for work, and they quickly fell for their new city. They live in Beacon Hill and wanted some photos that showed off their favorite spots in the neighborhood. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful afternoon for photos – the light was truly incredible. I’ll start with two of my favorite photos from our session:

We started out in the Boston Public Garden with some relaxed sitting and wandering.

I wanted to capture the beauty of the gardens, and the light that day, but without showing the throngs of tourists in the background. Patience was needed …

We headed over to Comm. Ave next, and it was here that I captured some of my very favorite images of the day:

Jessica wanted to show off the beauty of Beacon Hill so we wandered up through the cobblestone streets and found some great spots.

These two are so cute! I love how sweet and giggly they are with each other:

I loved the impromptu piggyback ride!

After dinner, and shortly before we were due to leave, the rain stopped and the sky opened up into this spectacularly moody tumble of clouds and light streaks. The banquet manager, Amy, took us off in golf carts to explore the landscape. Our first stop was this cool spot next to a big wooden bridge:

Puddles are always fun, and the bridge itself was cool too:

I wanted to grab some photos down by the bay before the weather turned again, so we jumped back into our carts and headed back to the club entrance. I love all the boats in the background in this series:

And finally, my favorite shots of the day. I just can’t get over that lush landscape …

Model Shoot at Mystic with ShootStyle

It’s been a busy start of the year for me – but busy in a super-fun not-in-the-office kind of way. I started 2010 with an awesome wedding photography conference in Mystic, CT. As well as getting to listen to speakers such as Jerry Ghionis, David Williams and Joe McNally, I got to hang out and photograph with the radtastic ShootStyle crew. Yeah! We met up on Saturday afternoon and worked in small groups, each group taking a different model. We totally lucked out by getting Bryn – not only is she absolutely gorgeous but she was willing to stand around in the freezing cold snow while we photographed her. Thank you, Bryn!

I loved the spots we found around Olde Mistick Village. The bright blue wall of the aquarium provided a much-needed shot of color (it was very gray that day).

One thing I love about group shoots like this is that you can play around with techniques and equipment you don’t usually have time to. After playing with my 85mm lens I switched over to a tilt-shift lens, which I used to create the next two images.

For the last two images above, I decided to see how my 60mm macro would work as a portrait lens – because sometimes you want to get really close in … and I love how it worked out!

I’ll have a couple more indoor shots to post, hopefully later this week. Huge thanks to ShootStyle for letting me tag along, I had so much fun playing with you all!

Promo Shots: Jordan Thompson

I love new stuff – and especially new stuff where I’m given complete creative free reign! I was therefore super excited when I was contacted to do some promo shots for Jordan Thompson, singer, guitarist and pianist for Striking Back. Jordan’s been playing in bands for over ten years, but has decided to go back to his roots and break out on his own. His sound is rich and raw, and he’s moving away from heavier rock to something more soulful and emotional.

I wanted to create images that would give Jordan a different edge, and yet reflect both where he’s coming from and where he’s going. We had a ton of fun playing around in Greenlake and on First Hill, and apart from a very sad story about a bashed-up $4k guitar (!) it was a hugely successful day. Special thanks to Christine, Jordan’s super-star wife, stylist and all-around fun lady for her help. Boudoir Teasers for Mrs P

Last Tuesday, the fabulous Mrs P. came to my studio for her long-awaited boudoir session. Now Mrs P. is a fairly quiet, sweet and gentle soul on the outside, but to my complete surprise she was a total DIVA in the boudoir! She was such a natural with the posing, and I’m not sure that it’ s due solely to her America’s Next Top Model addiction …

It was a super fun session, and I’m so happy she’s up for sharing a few of her favorites, and a few of mine too. You’ve got a lucky hubby at home, Mrs P – and I bet he’s a very happy man come Valentine’s Day!
